If your website traffic dipped this year and you have not changed anything, you are not imagining it. Google now shows an AI Overview at the top of more than half of all searches, and plenty of people get their answer right there without clicking a single result. Small business sites are taking the biggest hit. The fix is not to give up on SEO. The fix is to become the source Google's AI quotes. In this post I will walk you through exactly how I restructure client sites so they get cited inside AI Overviews instead of getting buried underneath them.
What AI Overviews Are Doing to Small Business Traffic
Quick recap if you have not been watching this closely. An AI Overview is the AI generated answer box Google places above the traditional results. One recent study by Stackmatix found that about 58 percent of search results pages now include one. When it appears, a big share of searchers read the summary and never scroll down.
The damage is not spread evenly. Sites that have not adapted are seeing 20 to 40 percent traffic declines on informational queries, and Chartbeat data shows smaller sites are getting hit hardest. Through 2026 Google has kept expanding AI Overviews into local, commercial, and comparison searches, which is exactly the territory most small business websites live in. If you run a service business, this is not a future problem. It is showing up in your analytics right now.
The Upside Nobody Talks About
Here is the part that keeps me optimistic. Getting cited inside an AI Overview is the new featured snippet, and it pays. Brands cited inside an Overview see roughly 35 percent more organic clicks than brands that rank on the same page but are not included. Google links out to its sources, so the sites that feed the answer still collect traffic, and that traffic tends to be more qualified because the searcher already read the summary and wants more depth.
In other words, the pie is smaller but the slices for cited sites are bigger. Your job is to be one of the citations.
How Google Decides Who Gets Cited
After digging through the research and testing on my own client sites, the pattern is consistent. Google's AI pulls from pages that:
- Already rank organically for the topic. Traditional SEO still comes first.
- Answer the question directly and early, in plain language the AI can lift.
- Use clean structure: clear headings, short paragraphs, lists, and tables.
- Show real first-hand experience instead of generic advice.
- Have consistent business information across the web.
None of that requires an enterprise budget. It requires discipline. Here is how to work through each one.
Lead With the Answer
The single biggest change I make on client sites is rewriting opening paragraphs. Most small business blog posts warm up for 300 words before saying anything useful. AI Overviews reward the opposite. Answer the query in your first 100 words, then spend the rest of the page earning trust and adding depth.
I also add what I call an answer capsule under each H2: two or three sentences that directly answer the question the heading asks, followed by supporting detail. When Google's AI scans your page, those capsules are exactly the kind of clean, quotable chunks it prefers to cite. Back them up with a specific number or example whenever you can, because claims with evidence get cited over vague ones.
Structure Your Pages So AI Can Lift Them
Formatting is no longer just about readability. It determines whether a machine can parse your content. My checklist:
- One clear H1, descriptive H2s phrased as questions people actually search.
- Paragraphs of two to four sentences. No walls of text.
- Bullet lists for steps and comparisons, tables for pricing or specs.
- FAQ sections with real questions, marked up with FAQ schema.
- Article and LocalBusiness schema so Google understands who is talking.
If you are on WordPress, most of this is built into the block editor plus a good SEO plugin. Modern versions of Rank Math and Yoast will handle the schema and flag structure issues right in your dashboard.
Show Real Experience, Not Generic Advice
The strongest differentiator in 2026 is first-person experience. Google is actively trying to separate human expertise from AI generated filler, and phrases like “when I handled this for a client” are trust signals. So are original photos of your actual work instead of stock images.
This is great news for small businesses. You have real customers, real projects, and real results. A plumber who writes up an actual repair with photos will beat a thousand word generic article from a content farm every time. Write what only you could write.
Keep Your Business Info Consistent Everywhere
AI systems build a model of your business as an entity. Your name, address, phone number, and services need to match across your website, your Google Business Profile, and the directories that matter in your industry. Mismatched or stale listings make the AI less confident about citing you, especially for local searches. While you are at it, keep your Google Business Profile active with posts, photos, and review replies, since local AI Overviews lean heavily on it.
If you want a structured way to audit all of this, my 10 point website checkup covers the same items I run for clients.
Do Not Skip the Technical Basics
Google's AI cannot cite what it cannot crawl. Slow, bloated sites get crawled less and ranked lower, which takes you out of the citation pool before content quality even matters. Core Web Vitals still count, so start with my guide on how to speed up a slow WordPress site. Hosting is the foundation under all of it. If your current host is dragging, moving to something like Hostinger is one of the cheapest performance upgrades available to a small business.
Diversify Before Google Makes You
Even if you do everything right, zero-click search means Google owns less of your future than it used to. The small businesses winning right now treat their website as home base and build traffic sources they control. Grow an email list from day one. Repurpose every blog post into short vertical videos for YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, which is something a tool like AutoShorts can automate for you. And lean on AI to keep your output sustainable. I covered my full stack in the 9 AI tools I actually use for small business clients.
Where to Start This Week
Do not try to overhaul your whole site at once. Here is the order I follow:
- Find your five pages with the most impressions in Search Console and rewrite their openings to answer the query in the first 100 words.
- Add an FAQ section with schema to your top service page.
- Fix your business info everywhere it appears, starting with your Google Business Profile.
Those three moves alone put you ahead of most local competitors, because almost nobody is doing this yet.
If you would rather have someone handle it for you, this is exactly the kind of work I do every day at Web Guy Nick. Head over to webguynick.com and tell me about your site, and I will show you where your biggest AI search opportunities are.
